44th OC Fair Homewine Competition
Co-Sponsored by the Orange County Wine Society
Saturday June 13, 2020
OC Fair & Event Center – Costa Mesa, CA
The Orange County Wine Society invites you to volunteer for the 44th annual OC Fair Homewine Competition being held on Saturday June 13, 2020 at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa.
As one of the largest and most prestigious amateur competitions in California, this event has played an important part in the development and support of amateur winemakers in California since 1977. This judging recognizes non-professional winemakers through awards given to their outstanding wines. The OC Fair competition is unique in that written evaluations and comments made during the judging are returned to the winemaker. This invaluable feedback from wine experts help them to improve their wines and understand more about the winemaking process. Last year 596 wines were entered by 180 winemakers. This year we expect a significant increase in the number of entries. We would greatly appreciate your support of this premier event.
The success of the Home Wine Competition depends heavily on the volunteers from the entire Orange County Wine Society. We are soliciting your help. Approximately 100 volunteers are needed to serve wine to the judges and perform other support functions.
We need personnel to fill the following functions:
- Steward to serve wine to the judges
- Spotter on the floor with the judges
- Glass crew to wash used glasses
- Data entry personnel
- Judge liaisons to pick up the completed judging forms
- Food service to help serve lunch and clean up
- Registration desk from 7am to 9am (you will also be assigned a second function)
Please be sure to indicate your preferred assignment on the sign-up form and please submit one form per person. If you want to work with a spouse or other partner indicate this under “Comments”.
COMPETITION DAY is June 13th. A hot breakfast will be offered from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. A brief meeting of all stewards to review all procedures will start at 8:30. The competition begins at 9:00 a.m. sharp and usually ends about 1:00 p.m. After the competition, a scrumptious lunch will be provided by the Orange County Wine Society’s own “Cook’s Caucus”. After lunch you will have the opportunity to taste many of the award-winning wines. More detailed competition information will be provided to all volunteers and stewards a week or so before the competition.
